14-year-old American dies after eating extremely spicy chips
14-year-old Harris Wolobah from Worcester, Massachusetts died after eating extremely spicy tortilla chips. He experienced stomach pain and subsequently fainted after eating them. He passed away at the hospital.
The extremely spicy tortilla chips are marketed as the 'One Chip Challenge'. The chips contain two of the world's hottest peppers: the Carolina Reaper and the Naga Viper. Each chip is individually packaged in a coffin-shaped box.
According to Harris's mother Lois Wolobah, who spoke to NBC Boston, her son passed away due to complications from eating the chips. An official cause of death has not yet been determined.
The One Chip Challenge is a social media challenge where participants eat the spicy chips and then wait as long as possible before eating or drinking anything else to alleviate the effects.
Manufacturer pulls product from shelves
After the teenager's death, Paqui, the maker of the chips, pulled the product from shelves, as reported on their website. The producer offered their condolences to the family of the deceased Harris. Prior to the teenager's death, the same company had dared people to take part in the challenge and post photos of it.
The label on the chips contained a warning that children, pregnant women, people with underlying health issues or those sensitive to spicy food should avoid the product. It also warned of symptoms like breathing difficulties, fainting or prolonged nausea.
